Beth Orton has been one of the most unique and beguiling voices in music for the past two decades. The follow up - Central Reservation - brought international success and the Brit Award for best British female. Further albums like the Jim O’Rourke produced Comfort of Strangers and 2012’s Sugaring Seasondeepened the breadth of her craft (Sugaring Season was described by Pitchfork as "ten songs of sweet resilience delivered by a voice of seemingly effortless expression”). Blasted grassland, the thin ribbon line of the freeway unspooling beneath wheels, skies stretched wide between mountaintop. It is dream music, foggy, atmospheric, the melodies you hear while you gazing out through fingerprint smeared windows into a constantly moving, metamorphing – landscape…. It makes sense then, that BRONCHO, born out of out a film project, its initial incarnation sparked when founder Ryan Lindsey was asked to create music, “to set to an early 80s punk film.” “That’s all I knew about it,” he remembers, “they were looking for songs that touched this era. And songs kept coming to me and turned something on inside of me artistically.” Lindsey found himself in the midst of prolific run of songs and he liked the idea “of starting out there and seeing where it could go.”.

5White Denim + Syd ArthurO2 ABC
O2 ABC, Glasgow
Frantic and freewheeling indie rock combo White Denim hail from Austin, Texas, where bandmates Josh Block (drums), Steve Terebecki (bass), and James Petralli (guitars, vocals) first set up shop in 2005. All three members were veterans of the Austin scene; Block and Petralli had previously played together in the alt-rock band Parque Torche, while Terebecki was a member of Peach Train. Drawing from a number of punk and garage rock influences, the group fashioned a hard-hitting sound with crunchy guitar riffs and frantic energy. Let's Talk About It, a 7" EP, marked the band's studio debut in 2007. After releasing another EP in 2008, the group retooled many of its older songs for Explosion, White Denim's first full-length release. The band had amassed a sizable audience in the U.K. by this point, prompting the sophomore album Fits to hit British shores several months before its American release in October 2009. The following year, the group expanded its lineup to include second guitarist Austin Jenkins, and shortly afterwards self-released Last Day of Summer as a way for the bandmembers to clear out song ideas they'd been bouncing around for the past four years. In 2011, White Denim released their fourth full-length album, D, on Downtown Records. The following year they fleshed out their sound with fourth member Austin Jenkins (guitar) and embarked on a tour with Wilco. After some late-night conversations, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy agreed to lend a hand in the production of their fifth full-length release, Corsicana Lemonade, which was released in late 2013. The band quickly followed up with The Pretty Green EP in 2014. In 2015, Josh Block and Austin Jenkins left the lineup, and James Petralli and Steve Terebecki recruited two new members to take their places, guitarist Jonathan Horne and drummer Jeffrey Olson. The new edition of White Denim went into the studio with producer Ethan Johns and returned with their sixth full-length album, Stiff, released in March 2016.

GUN have announced a headline UK tour taking place in October. This will be their first full tour reunited with original Guitarist Alex Dickson. The band recently announced Alex was returning, playing his comeback show at Glasgow’s Stag & Dagger Festival, which the Scottish Sun called “Effortless class”, while the Sunday Mail called the show “breath-taking” and “a real highlight”.

The October headline tour is preceded by some summer dates including Camden Rocks in London and Party at the Palace in August. GUN’s Jools Gizzi says: “Alex was an integral part of the band during the 'Gallus' era and featured on GUN's biggest hit 'Word Up', which appeared on the 'Swagger' album. His phenomenal guitar playing always made a massive impact at live shows and we really can't wait for you all to see him play live again. We've been working away in the studio, writing for the next GUN album. We can't wait for the fans to hear the new material.”

Glasgow noise pop due Honeyblood are back this year with a new record and will embark on an intimate tour of smaller UK venues. Despite their minimal setup, Honeyblood’s songs are fully formed and perfectly assured. With nothing extraneous, their music is driven through tightly-bound instrumentals and laced with the sheer strength and beauty of Stina’s voice. The songs resonate with deep melodic hooks and the kind of uncomplicated charm that’ve drawn contemporary comparisons to the likes of the Dum Dum Girls, as well as the strident delivery of Jenny Lewis. The band also tellingly cite the darker currents of The Breeders, PJ Harvey and Throwing Muses as lifelong influences.

Spring King are one of the UK’s most exciting new bands, no question. But it’s not in their nature to take the easy route. From a bathroom-based de facto studio to their superb debut album ‘Tell Me If You Like To’, their story is a victory for any band plugging away endlessly in the hope of one day achieving their dreams.

‘Tell Me If You Like To’ captures the chaos and rollercoaster turns of Spring King’s previous few years. It possesses the same 100mph, blink-and-you-missed-it spirit as debut track ‘Let’s Ride’, coupled with moments of stark clarity. ‘The Summer’ is a homage to heroes The Beach Boys and a dead cert go-to anthem for 2016. ‘Rectifier’ and ‘Demons’ wrestle with fear and paranoia. ‘Who Are You?’ is the blistering garage rock sister track to ‘City.’ But throughout, these emotionally twisted songs are ready to be embraced by thousands.

When Matt Hitt says Drowners' second album was "written with a lot of uncertainty and darkness," it's easy to ask one simple question: Really? After all, the hooks careening across 'On Desire' hit as hard as their debut, a DIY record that earned Drowners a cult following on the road alongside Cage The Elephant, Foals, and Arctic Monkeys. If anything, the New York band - helmed by Hitt and rounded out by guitarist Jack Ridley, bassist Erik Snyder, and drummer / multi-instrumentalist Daniel Jacobs - is as bold and brash as ever.

Check out this review from The Guardian last December and get an idea of who Black Honey are, and what they're about -

Joining them on the night is Dream Wife who make music embracing their love for edgy pop. Oozing girl power, the music juxtaposes simple pop hooks, cutting riffs and screamy dreamy vocals.

‘United Crushers’ (March 4, Mom + Pop / Memphis Industries) is POLIÇA’s third full length release and most remarkable album to date. The band, which includes Channy Leaneagh, dual drummers, Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu and Chris Beirden on bass with producer Ryan Olson at the helm, collectively wrote the album in Minneapolis in the winter of 2015 during their first true break from two years of touring. They recorded it at the renowned Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, TX, nestled just a few short miles from the US/Mexico border. The new album builds on POLIÇA’s signature synthesizer and percussion-heavy sound with more complex arrangements and a bigger, crisper hi fi punch due to the new approach they took to writing and recording together, all in the same
room. There's a tighter groove to these songs and a more vulnerable quality to them, especially in Leaneagh's singing. Her incredible vocal range is on display throughout, beautifully raw and less electronically affected than on previous recordings.

In September 2016, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club is releasing its new album ‘The Commandments According to SCAC’. It has been twenty-four years since Slim Cessna parted ways with The Denver Gentlemen, that grand progenitor of the peculiar strain of Gothic Americana unique to the Mile High City, to form Slim Cessna’s Auto Club with a group of talented peers. Many bands with a long and successful run like that would stick close to its roots. But rather than rest on well-earned laurels, the Auto Club challenged itself to break with well-worn modes of operating for the new record.

Whatever the true source of this transformation, The Commandments According to SCAC’ sounds like a band marshalling its creative inspiration to mark out a new chapter of its existence. When you get to see the Auto Club tour following the album’s release, you’ll get to see an already mighty band reinvigorated by this new spirit as well as by the fire that has long burned in its collective belly.
