Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh Eddie Van Halen once remarked that the most amazing thing about Led Zeppelin was that, for a band often cited as the godfathers of heavy metal, so much of their repertoire was acoustic. Theirs was a reputation built not on being the loudest band all the time, but rather at just the right time. It's a lesson that San Francisco-via-Santa Cruz sextet Sleepy Sun have taken to heart-- their debut album, Embrace, dispenses its earth-quaking riffage in such carefully measured, perfectly spaced-out rations, it tricks you into thinking the band is much heavier than it actually is. - Pitchfork 7.5

Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh Go check out Tweak Bird. They've been touring with Big Business and are right about as good as that would suggest. Good and noisy even. With good songs. And big guitars and stuff.
Here's a nice You Tube clip of them being right noisy on a TV show.

www.myspace.com/woodpigeon
Woodpigeon runs as a rather friendship-minded musical collective, with a growing
membership that typically calls Canada (mostly Calgary, Alberta), bits of Europe,
California, and even Doha, Qatar home. It’s a party-line of sorts — a tour is
booked, friends are called, and groups are assembled. The songs are never done
in the same way from tour to tour. Sometimes there’s a full string section.
Sometimes dueling ukuleles. And sometimes, it’s simply done solo style — the
way every song is born.
For the summer of 2009, we’re excited to play with some friends old and new as
we make our way across the UK and dip into Sweden and Germany. From time to
time, our Motown obsession leads to a doo-wop cover or two. At other times, we
like to get a little noisy. I know how to recite a single poem in Swedish — a
children’s game about a deer and his antlers. Our German is admittedly rather
poor — on a previous tour, one member attempted to order breakfast from the
ticket-taker on the train when she requested, “Fahrkarten, bitte.” I should have
listened a little closer when my Oma and Opa spoke to me in German as a baby.
Music-wise, Woodpigeon has released two albums in Europe: Songbook in
September 2008, and Treasury Library Canada in February 2009. People have
written nice things about them and given them lots of stars. Treasury Library
Canada has just been listed as a contender for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize here
in Canada, which is a bit like the Mercury Music Prize but newer and handed out
in dollars instead of pounds sterling (and through today’s exchange rates
amounts to a somewhat smaller prize, but it’s a joy to be nominated and all that).
It’s all been a rather amazing adventure. We’re just finishing up on a new record
called Die Stadt Muzikanten, inspired lightly by the old Bremen folktale ‘Die
Bremer Stadtmusikanten’. I know we’ve mis-spelled it, but I like the way
‘stadtmusikanten’ looks like as two words with a “z” instead of an “s.” It comes
out in January 2010, and we’re pretty excited about it.
We’re also excited about playing for you all. Can’t wait, in fact. We’ll see you
there, and hopefully share a beer with each and every one of you. That’s a lot of
beer, but we’re ready for the challenge.

| 15 | The Telescopes / St Deluxe | Captains Rest | |
Captains Rest, Glasgow THE TELESCOPES:
Stephen Lawrie of the Telescopes enlists the help of St Deluxe once
again to create another fantastic night of “stunning, a cataclysm of noise” -
The Scotsman once again following their joint performance in April of this year.
Both the Glasgow (Sat 15th Aug @ The Captains Rest) and Edinburgh
(Monday 17th Aug @ Sneaky Pete's)performances will be based on the
“Taste” era cuts and will take off where the last gig ended, in hysteria and a crowd thirsty for more of the same.
Recent re-releases of the Telescopes back catalogue have delighted old
fans, and captured a fresh audience since the second wave of "nu-gaze"
bands and the return to the fold of such bands as My Bloody Valentine,
Spectrum etc. The NME even acknowledges “the genus of the Telescopes”. Together with St Deluxe backing Stephen for a full electric set there should be more than just a reprise of the “truly stunning two-song encore with Glasgow’s St Deluxe acting as backing band”. -The List
This is a very special performance which should not be missed especially if the last one is anything to go by.
ST DELUXE:
Tim Burgess of the Charlatans
“I have played New Wave Stars on repeat constantly, great lyrics great
sound kinda mixes up Bleach era Nirvana, Tom Verlaine and
Bandwagonesque period Teenage Fanclub...Pushes all the buttons,
MONOCHROME ROCK N ROLL!!” Tim Burgess is the most recent name that St Deluxe can include as a
genuine fan! Along with Alan McGee, Joe Foster, Sonic Boom, Stuart
Braithwaite and Norman Blake all stating their admiration of “Scotland's
hottest new act” - Daily Record.
Joe Foster expresses the urgency of this band by saying in a way only he could by saying “St Deluxe are like a Pop Atom Bomb under a moribund and middle-aged UK music scene, fake indie bed-wetters shrivel in the fallout” With the release of the self titled album out on hot Glasgow art terrorist label Poppydisc Records earlier in the year with a recent headline tour taking in London's Death Disco (Alan McGee's club night), the Skinny Dip for fantastic Skinny Magazine in Edinburgh and shows in Aberdeen and Inverness, plus a revisited stint in the highlands appearing at GoNorth & Rockness Festival this month, and later in the Summer Belladrum Festival, not to mention the forthcoming show with the Vaselines and Grunge Gods Mudhoney in the luscious surroundings of the HMV Picture House in Edinburgh in October.
Along with all this activity recording for the follow up is underway with Joe Foster (Poppydisc Records/ Creation Records etc.) once again behind the desk which should be due for release sometime in the not too distant future. This along with plans for touring the USA next year and a list of labels clambering to get their mitts on the next record, this could be your last chance to see this band in such intimate settings.

| 18 | Frightened Rabbit | The Queen's Hall | |
The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh Playing clever but purposefully naïve pop in the manner of the Vaselines, the Twilight Sad, and the Clean, Frightened Rabbit sound a good bit bolder than their moniker would suggest, though it suits their lively but nervous musical personality. Frightened Rabbit was founded in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2004, when guitarist Scott Hutchison and his brother Grant, a percussionist who -- like his sibling -- prefers to keep his last name a secret, began recording demos of songs they had written. Encouraged by friends and family, the brothers added a second guitarist, their friend Billy, and the trio began making the rounds of Glasgow's pubs and music venues. Slowly but surely gaining a reputation for their work, Frightened Rabbit began work on their first album, initially planning to record at the home studio where they'd done their original demos but eventually opting to record at Glasgow's Diving Bell Studio with Marcus Mackay instead.
Frightened Rabbit released Sing the Greys through their own label, Hits the Fan Records, in mid-2006. Reviews were enthusiastic, and Universal picked up the disc for distribution in the U.K. and the U.S. The group's reputation enjoyed a considerable boost in America after they played a well-received showcase at the 2007 South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX, and the U.S. release of Sings only increased Frightened Rabbit's popularity. The band's sophomore release, Midnight Organ Flight, arrived in April 2008.

| 21 | Katy Perry | Barrowland Ballroom | |
Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow If Lucille Ball had a secret love child with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, it would look, sound, and behave like Katy Perry. The 24 year old L.A-based singer-songwriter's sassy confidence and feisty confessional songs have helped her conquer the world's charts and airwaves.
Katy marked her entrance this summer with the anthem "I Kissed A Girl" which instantly established her as the brightest new pop artist to emerge in 2008. Some may have questioned whether Katy Perry could follow up that success but with her recent hit single "Hot n Cold" she proved without a doubt that she is no one hit wonder. Both songs come from her outstanding debut album 'One Of The Boys', a sharp and witty pop-rock gem filled with candid tales of neurotic ex-boyfriends, crazy road trips with friends and figuring out who you are along the way.
Katy made such a powerful impression on MTV that they duly invited her to host this years illustrious MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool. She treated everyone to a colourful and flamboyant performance and won the award for "Best New Act" to boot.
More recently, Katy has been nominated for 'Best Female Pop Vocal Performance' at the prestigious 2009 Grammy's. Is there no stopping this girl?

| 23 | Andrew Bird | Studio 24 | |
Studio 24, Edinburgh
Chicago singer/songwriter/violinist Andrew Bird updates the traditions of small-group swing, German leider, and New Orleans jazz, mixing gypsy, folk, and rock elements into his distinctive style. Bird's projects include his group the Bowl of Fire (which also includes drummer Kevin O'Donnell, bassist Josh Hirsch, and guitarist Colin Bunn) and performing as an auxiliary member of the Squirrel Nut Zippers; in turn, the Zippers' Katharine Whalen and James Mathus appeared on the Bowl of Fire albums Thrills and Oh! the Grandeur. Bird has also recorded with artists like Pinetop Seven and Lil' Ed Williams, teaches music at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and performed on the score and soundtrack from the 1999 Tim Robbins film The Cradle Will Rock. His third album, 2001's The Swimming Hour, surprisingly found the Bowl of Fire turning to pop music, and with excellent results. As bandmembers remained active in their various other projects, the band continued and work on a follow-up began in 2002. To tide fans over, Bird self-released a limited-edition EP, Fingerlings, which documented live performances of some old and new songs by the band and solo. Early 2003 brought the release of another LP, Weather Systems, on the independent Grimsey label. Bird debuted on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe imprint in 2005 with Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs. He switched to Fat Possum for 2007's Armchair Apocrypha, an ambitious and eclectic album even by Bird's standards.
